The problem is that most filament manufacturers either don't track lots at all, track them loosely, or don't communicate lot information to buyers. What Good Lot Tracking Looks Like
A filament manufacturer with serious lot tracking does several things:
Labels every spool with a lot number. This seems basic, but most consumer-tier brands don't do it. Check your current supplier's spools—if you see only a color name and a weight, you have no lot traceability at all.
Maintains lot records. For each lot number, the manufacturer should be able to tell you: production date, raw material suppliers used, colorant batch ID, machine settings, and QC results. If something goes wrong six months later, this data lets you trace the failure.
Validates color consistency within and between lots. This typically means spectrophotometer readings (Delta-E measurements) against a master reference. Consumer filament brands usually skip this. Industrial filament suppliers do it as standard practice.
Separates lots in inventory and fulfillment. It's not enough to track lots—you also have to ensure that when a customer orders 30 spools, they don't accidentally receive a mix of three different lots. This requires warehouse organization and order fulfillment discipline that most small filament brands don't have.
The Print Farm Problem
Print farms feel lot consistency failures harder than anyone else. Consider a farm running 50 printers producing display models for a retail client. The client wants consistent gloss, consistent color, consistent surface texture across a run of 2,000 parts. If they say "we have SKUs and batch codes," push further: can you tell me which lot each spool in my order came from? The answer reveals how seriously they track this.
2. What's your color matching spec (Delta-E)?
A Delta-E of less than 1.0 is barely perceptible to the human eye. Delta-E greater than 2.0 is clearly visible. Good suppliers target Delta-E <1.0 for within-lot and <2.0 for between-lot. If they can't give you a number, they're not measuring it.
3. What's your diameter tolerance?
±0.05mm is the consumer standard. ±0.02mm is professional grade. Tighter tolerance means less variation in extrusion flow rate, fewer pressure fluctuations, and more consistent print quality—especially at high speeds.
4. Do you communicate lot transitions proactively?
Ask this directly: "If I have an ongoing order relationship, will you notify me when a new lot is coming into fulfillment?" Most won't. The ones who do have thought through the operational impact on their customers.
5. Can I order the same lot number for a repeat run?
For long production projects, the ability to request a specific lot number is extremely valuable. This is only possible if the supplier has enough inventory of that lot and meaningful traceability to know it exists.
Hex Codes as a Consistency Proxy
One underused practice: some manufacturers assign each color a hex code reference and maintain it as the master specification.
