The Forgely Maker Space gives makers free tools to estimate filament and price a print, a way to consign and sell your work at our Utah stores, and a paid featured-artist directory. Estimate filament by multiplying model volume by material density (PLA ≈ 1.24 g/cm³) and your infill; price a print by adding material, machine time, labor, and electricity, then your margin.
How We Estimate
Both calculators are deterministic — the same inputs always give the same estimate, with no guesswork hidden. Here is the method they use, so the math is usable even before you touch a slider.
- Filament grams
- Effective solid fraction (infill % + wall/support allowance) × model volume × material density, plus a wastage margin. Density: PLA 1.24, PETG 1.27, ABS 1.04 g/cm³.
- Filament length
- Grams ÷ density gives volume; divide by the filament cross-section (π r²) for 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm to get meters.
- Suggested price
- Material + machine time + labor + electricity + a failure buffer on consumables, then your margin applied once.
