PLA Plus Filament vs Standard PLA — Do You Need It? | Forgely

PLA Plus Filament — What It Is and When Standard PLA Is Better

PLA Plus (PLA+) is marketed as an upgraded version of standard PLA with improved toughness, layer adhesion, and impact resistance. Many brands sell PLA+ at a premium price, claiming it bridges the gap between PLA and engineering materials like PETG or ABS. The reality is more nuanced. Some PLA+ formulations do offer modest improvements in impact resistance, while others are standard PLA with a marketing label and a higher price tag. Forgely manufactures precision standard PLA with ±0.02mm diameter tolerance that outperforms many PLA+ products on the metrics that actually matter for print quality — extrusion consistency, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish.

Before you pay extra for PLA+, understand what you are actually getting and whether Forgely's precision standard PLA already meets your needs. For the vast majority of applications — prototypes, models, functional parts, cosplay, and production printing — tight-tolerance standard PLA delivers better results than loose-tolerance PLA+. Manufactured in Ogden, Utah, with lot tracking and hex-coded colors.

Why Forgely

  • ±0.02mm tolerance — diameter consistency affects print quality more than PLA+ additives. Tight tolerance eliminates the extrusion variance that causes most print failures.
  • Proven mechanical properties — Forgely standard PLA delivers consistent tensile strength and layer adhesion because our manufacturing process is controlled and lot-tracked.
  • No mystery additives — PLA+ formulations vary wildly between brands with no standard definition. Forgely PLA is a documented, consistent formulation you can rely on.
  • Lot-tracked batches — every spool's mechanical properties are traceable. No batch-to-batch surprises.
  • Made in Utah at $16.99/kg — premium quality without the PLA+ price premium. Why pay more for a marketing label?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PLA and PLA+?

There is no industry standard definition for PLA+. Different manufacturers add different modifiers — impact modifiers, crystallization agents, or toughening polymers — to standard PLA and call it PLA+. Some brands simply relabel standard PLA as PLA+ and charge more. The result is that PLA+ properties vary dramatically between brands. Forgely standard PLA has documented, consistent properties with ±0.02mm tolerance, giving you predictable results without guessing what is in your filament.

Is PLA+ stronger than regular PLA?

Some PLA+ formulations have modestly higher impact resistance (10-20% improvement) due to added toughening agents. However, this comes with trade-offs — PLA+ often has lower rigidity, higher stringing, and requires different temperature settings than standard PLA. For most applications, the strength difference is not meaningful. If you need significantly more strength than PLA provides, the correct answer is a different material (PETG, nylon, or polycarbonate), not PLA with additives.

When should I choose PLA+ over standard Forgely PLA?

Choose PLA+ only if you have a specific application requiring higher impact resistance than standard PLA provides and you have tested a specific PLA+ product from a reputable manufacturer that documents its additive formulation. For prototyping, modeling, cosplay, production printing, and most functional parts, Forgely's ±0.02mm tolerance standard PLA delivers better print quality and more predictable results than generic PLA+ products with unknown formulations and loose tolerances.
