Refill PLA Filament Spools — Reduce Waste | Forgely

Refill PLA Filament Spools — Less Waste, Same Precision

Every empty filament spool is plastic waste. Across the 3D printing community, millions of spools end up in landfills every year — most made from materials that are not recyclable in standard municipal programs. Forgely is committed to reducing spool waste and supports the refill spool movement. Our filament is manufactured to ±0.02mm diameter tolerance on standard 1kg spools, and we are actively developing refill and master-spool compatible options to minimize the plastic waste that comes with every kilogram of filament.

The refill concept is simple: buy one reusable spool (or master spool), then purchase filament on lightweight cardboard refill spools or as bare coils that transfer onto your reusable spool. This eliminates the heavy plastic spool from every subsequent purchase. For print farms running through dozens of spools per week, the waste reduction is significant — and so is the storage space savings.

Regardless of spool format, every meter of Forgely PLA holds ±0.02mm tolerance, is lot-tracked, and features hex-coded colors. Manufactured in Utah at $16.99/kg.

Why Forgely

  • Refill-friendly commitment — we support spool waste reduction through lightweight and reusable spool options.
  • ±0.02mm tolerance — precision manufacturing regardless of spool format. Refill filament with the same quality as standard spools.
  • Lot-tracked batches — every refill is traceable to its production run for full quality assurance.
  • Hex-coded colors — color consistency matters whether it is on a plastic spool or a cardboard refill.
  • Made in Utah — domestic manufacturing with sustainable practices and fast shipping.

How do refill spools work?

Refill filament comes on a lightweight cardboard spool or as a bare coil secured with zip ties. You transfer the filament onto a reusable master spool (available from various manufacturers in a standard size) or use the cardboard spool directly in printers with open spool holders. The filament itself is identical to what ships on standard plastic spools — same ±0.02mm tolerance, same lot tracking, same hex-coded colors.

Can I reuse my empty Forgely spools?

Yes. Forgely spools are designed for durability and can be reused multiple times. Wind refill filament onto an empty Forgely spool, or repurpose empty spools for filament samples, wire storage, or workshop organization. If you cannot reuse them, check your local recycling program — our spools are made from recyclable plastic. We are also exploring a spool return program for direct reuse.

Does refill filament compromise quality?

Not with Forgely. Our filament is manufactured the same way regardless of final spool format. The extrusion, diameter monitoring, pigment control, and lot tracking are all identical. The only difference is the spool it ships on. You get the same ±0.02mm tolerance and hex-coded color consistency with less plastic waste.
