3D Printing in Utah: Local Filament & On-Demand Prints

3D Printing in Utah: Local Filament + On-Demand Prints (2026)

Utah has a surprisingly deep 3D printing scene for a state its size. There's a filament manufacturer here (that's us), two retail storefronts along the Wasatch Front, a handful of print-on-demand shops, library printers in the biggest cities, and the usual national ship-to-you options. This guide maps it out so you can pick the right one for your job — whether you need a spool of PLA this afternoon or 50 production parts by Friday.

Short version: for anything time-sensitive, you probably don't need to ship from out of state. For specialty exotics, you still might.

The Utah 3D printing landscape at a glance

  • Local filament manufacturing — Forgely Performance PLA, extruded in Roy, UT. The only filament made in the state.
  • Retail storefronts with filament + hardware — Forgely's two shops in Roy and Murray carry Forgely-made PLA plus major third-party brands (Eryone, Ziro, Sunlu, and others).
  • On-demand print services — a mix of hobbyist, commercial, and library printers from Logan down to Provo. Quality and lead times are all over the map.
  • National mail-order — Amazon, Prusa, MatterHackers, and the major printer-brand direct sites all ship into Utah in 2–5 business days.

Where to buy filament in Utah (local pickup)

Forgely — Roy & Murray

Two physical storefronts, both staffed by people who print daily and will answer questions about your specific printer.

  • Forgely Roy — Mon–Fri 10–8, Sat 10–6, closed Sunday. Next door to the filament factory, so if the color you want just came off the line, that's where you'll find it first.
  • Forgely Murray — Mon–Fri 11–6, Sat 10–6, closed Sunday. Same catalog as Roy, closer if you're coming from the Salt Lake Valley or south.

Both stock Forgely Performance PLA made on-site, plus Eryone PLA in classic, dual, glitter and glow finishes, Ziro, Sunlu, and other major third-party brands. Beyond PLA, both stores carry PETG, TPU, ABS, PC, PA-CF, and resin.

What "made in Utah" actually means for filament

Forgely extrudes PLA in Roy from NatureWorks Ingeo resin — the same base polymer most premium PLA uses. On-site manufacturing changes three things:

Diameter QC is tighter. We measure every spool on the line and reject outside ±0.02 mm. The alternative is a container ship, a warehouse, and a long gap between extrusion and the test that would've caught drift.

The spools are fresh. PLA is mildly hygroscopic, and a spool that spent six months on a container crossing the Pacific has absorbed moisture before it ever reaches your printer. A spool extruded this week in Roy hasn't.

Refill and spool-less options exist. If you already have an empty cardboard or plastic spool, buy the refill version and keep running. It's cheaper for us to not ship you a spool, and we pass that along. Also fewer empty spools in the garage.

Translucent colors are available in both standard spooled and refill form — the translucents are the ones people most often come in to see under the shop lights before buying.

Where to get on-demand prints in Utah

Print shops & makerspaces

Options roughly from most to least accessible:

Forgely in-store printing. Bring an STL to either store, we'll quote same-day for small PLA/PETG parts and 1–3 days for larger or specialty-material work.

University makerspaces. The U of U, BYU, and USU all run print labs. These are mostly student-access with limited community hours — call before driving over.

Public library printers. Salt Lake City Main and Provo City Library both have community printers. Expect a size cap around 15 cm on a side, multi-day queues, and PLA-only. Great for one small keychain; not great for a batch of 20 brackets.

Independent Etsy/eBay sellers based in Utah. Quality varies enormously. If you're going this route, the companion piece on how to vet a print shop is worth ten minutes before you hand over a file.

What to send a print shop so you get back what you wanted

A good job ticket has five things:

  1. The STL (or STEP if the shop supports it).
  2. Material and brand if you have a preference.
  3. Infill percentage.
  4. Layer height.
  5. One line about tolerance — "slip fit on a 10 mm shaft" is more useful than "accurate."

If you can't specify two through five, say so and ask the shop to recommend. A shop that pushes back with questions is a shop that cares. One that just says "sure" and quotes without asking is one that will deliver whatever default their slicer opens with.

Lead times by material (Utah local vs ship)

Rough guide for stocked items at Forgely Roy/Murray versus ordering online to a Utah address.

Material Local pickup (Forgely Roy/Murray) Ship from national retailer
PLA (standard colors) Same day 2–5 business days
PETG Same day 2–5 business days
TPU Same day 3–7 business days
ABS / ASA Same day 3–7 business days
PC / Nylon / CF composites Next day (special order) 5–10 business days
Resin (SLA) Same day 2–5 business days

"Next day" on PA-CF and PC means we can usually have it pulled from the factory stock in Roy and sitting at Murray by the following afternoon. Call first — the full specialty catalog isn't on both shelves at all times.

When to drive local vs ship it

Not every job wants the same answer. A rough decision rule:

  • Drive local when you need it this week, you want to see the color or finish in person, you're learning and want a human to ask, or you're buying enough that the shipping cost would've paid for the gas twice over.
  • Ship it when you're on an auto-ship subscription and timing isn't tight, or you need a specialty resin or exotic composite that nobody in the state stocks (think PEEK, PEI, specific pigmented resins).
  • Call ahead when you're placing a large commercial order. Both Roy and Murray will pull stock onto a cart so you're not standing in the aisle counting spools, and we can quote volume pricing before you drive over.

More depth on the trade-offs lives in the companion post on 3D printing services near me: costs & ship vs drive.

Materials & printer tips for Utah's climate

Low humidity is a gift — don't waste it

Utah's dry air is the single friendliest climate in the country for hygroscopic filaments. PETG, nylon, PVA, and TPU all behave better out here than they do in Houston or Seattle. A spool sitting in a garage in Ogden through July will be in better shape than the same spool in a basement in Atlanta.

That said, dry air isn't zero humidity. For nylon and TPU specifically, a sealed dryer like the Sunlu Filadryer E2 is still worth it. We run spools through it before a long nylon print even here, and we store opened TPU in it between jobs.

Desert winter static also wreaks small havoc on multi-material feeders — if your unit starts missing filament, a humidifier in the print room (not the dryer, the room) usually fixes it.

Elevation and enclosure

The Wasatch Front sits between 4,200 and 5,000 ft. Thinner air means part-cooling fans move less mass per CFM, so PLA overhangs run slightly worse here than at sea level with the same fan settings. If you're copying a profile off a Printables comment from someone in Florida, bump fan 5–10% and expect to tune.

ABS and ASA get the opposite effect — thinner air cools the whole print faster, which is exactly what you don't want. An enclosure matters more here than it would at sea level, especially in winter. More on the trade-off in closed vs open 3D printers 2026: Utah shop notes.

Which Utah option fits your project?

A quick decision tree, honest about where to send you even when it isn't us.

  • One small part, needed this week. Local print shop or Forgely in-store — faster than any ship-to-you option, and you can inspect before paying.
  • One tiny keychain, no rush, free is better than fast. SLC Main or Provo City library.
  • 50+ parts, production-grade. Bring the STL to Forgely for a quote. We'll quote the print, and if it makes more sense for you to buy filament and run it yourself, we'll say so and sell you the filament.
  • Filament for your own printer. Walk into Roy or Murray. Pick colors in person.
  • Something exotic — PAHT-CF, PEEK, PEI, or a specific pigmented resin. Call first. We can special-order most of these in 3–7 days.

FAQ

Is there a 3D printing store in Utah? Yes. Forgely runs two physical stores: Roy (Mon–Fri 10–8, Sat 10–6) and Murray (Mon–Fri 11–6, Sat 10–6). Both carry filament, parts, and in-stock printers; both are closed Sunday.

Is any filament actually made in Utah? Yes. Forgely Performance PLA is extruded on-site in Roy from NatureWorks Ingeo resin. It's the only filament manufactured in the state.

Can I get something 3D printed in Utah same-day? For small PLA or PETG parts, often yes — depends on the shop queue when you walk in. For large or specialty-material prints, plan on 2–5 days. Call ahead with your STL and specs so we can quote before you drive.

Do Utah libraries do 3D printing? Salt Lake City Main and Provo City Library both operate public printers. Expect size caps around 15 cm on a side and multi-day queues. Fine for a one-off; not a path to a batch of 20 brackets.

What filament brands can I buy locally in Utah? At Forgely: Forgely Performance PLA (made here), plus Eryone, Ziro, Sunlu, and other major third-party brands. Materials span PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS, PC, PA-CF, and resin.

Bottom line

Utah's 3D printing scene is small but complete. Unless you're chasing an exotic engineering polymer, you don't need to ship from across the country — and for anything time-sensitive, you'll regret it if you do. For filament, buy local and skip the shipping. For prints, local shops beat mail-order on anything that has to happen this week.

Forgely's Roy and Murray stores are the two front doors. Walk in with your STL for a same-day quote, bring your printer manual if you want help picking a profile, or just come look at color swatches in person before you commit. If you're curious about the Salt Lake Valley specifically, there's a companion piece on 3D printing in Salt Lake City.

Walk-in or call: Forgely Roy (next to the factory) and Forgely Murray. Bring your STL for a same-day quote.
