PLA vs resin for miniatures: an honest comparison
We'll do this in three parts: where resin actually wins, where PLA quietly wins, and what we'd tell a friend.
Where resin genuinely wins
Sub-millimeter facial features. Chainmail texture you can count individual links on. Jewelry-scale ornamentation, scrollwork on weapon hilts, the texture of a wizard's beard at 28mm scale. Resin at 25 to 50 micron layers resolves all of that. FDM, even at its best, smears those features just a little.
If you're printing a centerpiece dragon, a character bust, or a competition-painted display mini, resin is the right tool. We're not going to argue otherwise.
Where PLA quietly wins
Everywhere else, PLA wins on workflow.
Cost per mini is about a third of resin once you factor in waste, supports, and failed prints. There's no toxic uncured resin to handle, no nitrile gloves, no IPA wash station, no UV cure box, no respirator, no ventilation requirements. You hit print, you come back, the mini is done. No second machine in the chain.
PLA minis also survive actual tabletop play. Resin minis are brittle. Drop one and a sword arm snaps clean off. PLA flexes a little before it gives. Pet knocks it off the table, kid grabs the lich king, the mini lives. The workspace stays kid-safe and pet-safe because there's no uncured resin sitting around.
Heat resistance trends the other way (don't leave PLA in a hot car), but for indoor storage and play, it's a non-issue.
The honest verdict
If you print 5 or more minis a month, paint them, and actually push them around a table, PLA is the better workflow. Resin is the better material for display pieces. Most hobbyists fall in the first bucket and inherit a resin workflow they didn't really need.

What to look for in a miniature-grade PLA
Not all PLA prints minis well. Three things matter.
Tight diameter tolerance (±0.02mm)
Cheap filament drifts ±0.05mm or worse along the spool. That inconsistency turns into uneven extrusion, which turns into blobs and zits on the surfaces you're trying to keep smooth. Faces are the first place it shows. Look for tolerance on the spec sheet, not just in marketing copy.
Low moisture out of the bag
PLA absorbs water from the air. Wet PLA hisses out of the nozzle, lays down rough, and strings between features. Fatal for minis where you need clean overhangs and crisp edges.
Good filament ships sealed with desiccant. Once you open the bag, store the spool dry. We wrote up the best way to store open spools. A sealed bin with desiccant beads handles most climates.
Matte finish over glossy
Glossy PLA looks great on the spool and terrible on a mini. The shine scatters across every layer line and washes out detail until you prime. Matte solids do the opposite: light scatters evenly across the surface, and you can actually see what the printer laid down before you touch a brush to it.

Slicer settings that pull detail out of FDM
This is where most "PLA can't do minis" arguments fall apart. The default profiles on most slicers are tuned for functional parts, not minis. Change six settings and the difference is immediate.
Layer height: 0.08–0.12mm
0.08mm is the detail floor if your printer is well-tuned and you have the time. 0.12mm is the sweet spot for most hobbyists: fast enough to keep printing fun, fine enough that faces hold definition. Anything 0.16mm and above starts losing facial features and chainmail texture.
Nozzle: 0.4mm stock works; 0.25mm if you have it
Most users don't need to swap nozzles. A stock 0.4mm with thin walls handles 28mm scale fine. If you already own a 0.25mm nozzle and you're printing display pieces, use it. It's not the bottleneck for the average hobbyist.
Walls: 3 perimeters, 15% gyroid infill
Minis are mostly walls anyway. Bumping to 3 perimeters gives crisper edges and better feature definition on small protrusions like sword pommels and belt buckles. Gyroid infill at 15% resists splitting if a mini hits the floor. Anything denser is wasted plastic.
Print speed: slow down the outer walls
This is the highest-leverage setting on the list. Drop outer wall speed to 30–40 mm/s. Leave everything else fast. The surface you actually see, the outer wall, needs the motion-blur smoothness that slow printing gives. Infill and inner walls can rip at full speed.
Supports: tree supports, 65° overhang threshold
Tree supports leave dramatically less scarring on minis than grid or normal supports. They touch the model at fewer points, peel cleaner, and tear away without ripping surface texture. Most modern slicers have solid tree support implementations. Turn them on and set the overhang threshold around 65°.

Temperature and cooling
PLA at 205–215°C nozzle, 60°C bed, 100% part cooling fan after layer 3. Cooling is the difference between a clean fine overhang and a sagging blob. Post-processing: from off-the-bed to tabletop-ready
A few minutes of post-processing turns a printed mini into a paintable one.
Support removal
Flush cutters first to snip the trees away, then a sharp hobby knife to clean up the contact points. Pull slowly. The right tools matter. Forgely's favorite tools for support removal lists what we keep on the bench.
Sanding (optional)
320 grit, then 600 grit, on any visible layer lines. At 0.08mm layer height most minis don't need sanding at all. At 0.12mm you might touch up flat surfaces like shields or cloaks. Curves usually look fine straight off the bed.
Priming
Thin coats of grey primer, two or three passes, let each one dry. The PLA color underneath is your insurance. If a spot gets missed, grey shows grey instead of revealing a weird shiny patch.
Common mistakes that ruin miniature prints
We've made all of these. So have most hobbyists we know.
- Wet filament. Stringing, rough surfaces, blob-faced minis. Dry your spool or store it dry.
- 0.2mm layer height. Too coarse for faces. Drop to 0.12mm.
- No part cooling fan. Overhangs sag, fine details smear. Crank cooling.
- Supports too dense. They scar the print on removal. Use tree supports at sane density.
- Worn nozzle. Brass nozzles wear out faster than people think. Replace yearly if you print a lot.
- Painting before priming. Paint slides off bare PLA. Always prime.
