Every PLA Filament Colour & Finish, Ranked by Print
Hex codes, finish families, and the swatches that actually match what comes off the plate — plus the Utah-extruded picks we run in-house.
Written by the team that extrudes Forgely Performance PLA in Salt Lake City. We colour-match every batch against a printed reference tile, not a pellet.
The colour on the spool label almost never matches the colour on the print. Layer lines, light bounce, and finish chemistry all shift the hue, sometimes by a whole shade.
Most colour guides show you the raw filament. This one shows you the printed part, with hex codes taken from the surface of a real bench-marked cube.
By the end, you'll know which finish family to buy for the look you want, which colours print truest to their label, and where the tricky ones (translucents, silks, gradients) surprise you.
How to read this guide
- Every colour is grouped by finish family, not by brand.
- Hex codes are sampled from a printed 20mm cube at 0.2mm layer height under 5000K light. Spool colour is noted only when it drifts significantly.
- Print fidelity (1–5) rates how closely the finished print matches the label swatch.
- Layer hiding (1–5) rates how well the finish disguises visible layer lines.

Matte PLA — the layer-line eraser
Matte PLA is loaded with mineral filler that scatters light. The chalky finish hides layer lines better than any other family, which is why it's the #1 pick for miniatures and display prints.
What to know before you print it:
- Marginally more brittle than standard PLA.
- Runs cooler (190–210°C) for the best matte effect.
- Absorbs paint like a primer. Great substrate for hand-painted models.
Matte picks worth stocking:
- Ziro Matte PLA — deep, muted tones that read as painted resin.
- Ziro Matte Gradient — slow colour shift across the spool for one-print gradients.
Silk PLA — the metallic-look shortcut
Silk isn't metal. It's a polymer additive that gives the surface a satin sheen. Colours look richer, but layer lines catch highlights, so print quality matters more here than anywhere else.
Silks show every stringing artifact. Dry the spool. Slow the outer walls to about 30mm/s. If you skip either step, you'll see it.
Silk picks worth stocking:
Translucent PLA — light-passing colour
Translucents are the workhorse of lampshades, lithophanes, stained-glass lookalikes, and any print where you want depth. Forgely's translucent line is the only USA-extruded translucent PLA we've found that colour-matches batch to batch.
| Swatch | Colour | Hex | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ▯ | Transparent (clear) | #EAEAEA |
Not glass-clear. PLA scatters slightly. Best at low infill. |
| ▯ | Translucent Blue | #4A9ECF |

| ▯ | Translucent Dark Green | #2E6E4A |
— |
| ▯ | Translucent Teal | #3AB0B5 |

Metal-filled PLA — the heaviest finish
Real metal powder (bronze, copper, iron) suspended in PLA. Prints heavy, sands to a genuine metallic sheen, and with iron variants, actually rusts.
Watch out:
- Abrasive. Use a hardened nozzle or you'll grind a brass one out in one spool.
- Print slower to avoid nozzle wear and inconsistent flow.
- Post-processing with steel wool and polish is where the magic happens. Right off the plate, it looks dull.
Metal pick worth stocking:
- Eryone Burnt Titanium PLA — achieves an oxidised-metal look without post-processing.
Wood-filled PLA — grain you can sand
Blended with real wood fiber, often bamboo or pine. Sands, stains, and even burns like softwood. It's the closest a print gets to feeling non-plastic.
Print tips:
- Use a 0.6mm nozzle to prevent fiber jams.
- Bed at 55°C, nozzle at 200–210°C.
- Vary nozzle temperature 5°C mid-print to fake growth rings.
Wood picks worth stocking:
Marble & stone PLA — speckled naturals
Stone-fill PLA prints as a matte grey or beige with irregular black speckling. It looks like actual marble with no post-processing needed. Layer hiding is exceptional, and the finish is forgiving enough to skip the primer step entirely on planters and statuary.
Marble picks worth stocking:
Galaxy & sparkle PLA — glitter in a spool
Fine glitter or mica flake suspended in coloured PLA. Reads as "starfield" under direct light, and layer lines vanish behind the sparkle.
Sparkle picks worth stocking:
- Ziro Diamond PLA — fine crystalline flake that reads white-gold in direct sun.
- Ziro Mystical PLA
- Twinkling Red
Beyond the eight families — specialty PLA colours
Colour effects that don't fit the finish grid: gradients, high-speed formulas, and tough variants.
How to pick the right PLA colour for your print
| If your print is... | Buy this finish |
|---|---|
| Going to be sanded or painted | Matte. The porous surface is a built-in primer. |
| Back-lit or hollow | Translucent. |
| A decor piece (vase, statue, sign) | Silk or marble. |
| A functional part (bracket, jig, tool) | Solid. Hex fidelity matters less than dimensional accuracy. |
| A gift or cosplay prop | Galaxy, sparkle, or dual-silk. |
| Meant to look like a real material | Wood or metal-filled. Accept the abrasive-nozzle tax. |
Why the hex code on the spool never matches the print
Four reasons the finished part reads different from the pellet:
- Layer diffraction. Parallel layer lines create micro-shadows that darken every colour by 5–10% perceived value.
- Infill peek-through. At low infill, translucents and pastels show internal geometry as colour banding.
- Light-source temperature. 3000K warm-white bulbs shift blues green and yellows orange. Always colour-match under daylight or a 5000K bulb.
- Batch variance. Budget filaments can shift 2–3 Lab units between spools. Batch-matched Utah extrusion (Forgely's Performance PLA) holds within 1 unit.
PLA colour questions we get every week
How many PLA colours are there? Across the mainstream brands we stock, over 400 distinct SKUs. They collapse into 8 finish families and roughly 60 unique hues. Most colour needs are met by 12–18 solids plus one silk and one translucent.
Do PLA colours affect print quality? Yes, but subtly. White and clear PLA tend to run slightly higher-flow than heavily pigmented reds and blacks. Metal- and wood-fills are the biggest quality shifters. Treat them as different materials, not just different colours.
What's the most popular PLA colour? Black is #1 by volume (functional prints), followed by white, grey, and matte black. Cherry Red and Toxic Green top our specialty solids.
Can I mix PLA colours mid-print? Yes. Either with a multi-material system or by manually swapping filament at a layer change. Silks and matte finishes blend poorly at colour transitions. Solids blend cleanly.
Are translucent PLAs really see-through? See-through, not clear. PLA's crystallinity scatters light. For lampshade or lithophane looks, translucents win. For optically clear parts, you want resin, not filament.
Where is Forgely PLA made? Extruded in Salt Lake City, Utah, batch-matched against printed reference tiles. Every solid and translucent colour ships from our own line.
