Signal 1 — Diameter tolerance: the number that matters most
Diameter tolerance is the number every filament brand publishes, and it is also the number most buyers misread. A ±0.05mm claim on the spec sheet does not mean much if it was measured on a two-inch sample near the middle of the spool. What actually drives print quality is diameter distribution across the whole 1kg run, because flow-rate variance compounds over a ten-hour print.
At the nozzle, a 0.03mm swing in filament diameter is roughly a 5% change in volumetric flow. On a single line, you might not see it. On tall organic geometry or thin walls printed near flow limits, you see it as banding, over/under-extrusion, and dimensional drift on features that should be crisp.
Ask a prospective supplier this: "What is your laser-measured tolerance across a full spool, not a spot check, and can you show me the distribution curve for a recent lot?" A reliable filament manufacturer has that data on hand because they are already using it to trim the line in real time. If the answer is a shrug or a marketing PDF, keep shopping.

Signal 2 — Per-lot QC records you can actually see
A reliable filament manufacturer produces testable records for every lot: diameter distribution, ovality, moisture content at spooling, and mechanical pull-test data. Not a sample. Every lot. Those records get archived against a lot code, and the lot code goes on the spool.
The buyer test is simple. Ask: "If I read you a lot number off a spool I bought six months ago, what can you tell me about it?" A good answer includes the raw material batch it was extruded from, the day it ran, the diameter distribution, and any QC notes. A weaker answer is "we test samples from each production run." The word "samples" is doing a lot of work in that sentence and none of it is on your behalf.
Red flags to watch for: spools with no lot markings at all, batch numbers that are clearly a shipping SKU and not a production identifier, or a support team that cannot look up historical QC without escalating. Signal 3 — Spool-to-spool consistency (color, mechanical, flow)
If you run one printer, this signal barely registers. If you run twelve, it is the one that keeps you up at night. Two spools of the same color, same brand, same SKU should print the same part, whether they came off the line an hour apart or a month apart.
The two failure modes are mechanical drift (small variances in pellet moisture, extrusion temperature, or line speed shift the mechanical properties between runs) and pigment drift (a new pigment lot goes in, the color technically matches spec, but a customer looks at a two-color assembly and sees a mismatch). Both are avoidable. Both are common at manufacturers who batch reactively instead of planning pigment lot rotations.
Ask about pigment lot management and whether the manufacturer will re-run mechanical QC after any raw-material change. For volume orders, ask specifically about same-lot bundles: a print farm doing a 500-unit run wants every spool from the same extrusion run, not seven runs stitched together.

Signal 4 — Where the filament is actually extruded (not just packaged)
There is a specific sleight of hand worth learning to spot: "assembled in USA" is not the same as "extruded in USA." Filament can be extruded overseas, containerized across an ocean, sit in a humid port, arrive at a US warehouse, get respooled or repackaged, and ship to you with an American flag on the box.
Three problems with that supply chain:
Moisture exposure. Ocean freight is humid. PLA is hygroscopic. Even sealed, spools can pick up moisture during multi-week transit, and the manufacturer has no visibility into it.
Lead time and lot recourse. When a bad lot lands, an offshore extruder is a month of email chains away from doing anything about it. A domestic repackager is often just a middleman with no ability to run a replacement lot.
Traceability gaps. The pellet-to-spool chain is broken across companies, currencies, and languages. Lot codes rarely survive the handoff.

Signal 5 — Traceability: can they find your spool's lot in 60 seconds?
When a print fails at scale, the first question is diagnostic: is it this lot, or is it my printer? A reliable manufacturer can answer that question in the time it takes to open a support ticket. They pull the exact QC record, the raw material batch, and the run parameters, all keyed off the lot code on your spool.
The buyer test is easy. Email support with a lot code and a description of the failure. See what comes back. If they can produce archived QC data, cross-reference other reports from the same lot, and either confirm or rule out a batch issue, you are dealing with a real manufacturer. Signal 6 — Moisture control from pellet to sealed spool
PLA absorbs moisture aggressively, and moisture degrades everything downstream: stringing, brittle prints, blown surface finish, dimensional drift on precision parts. If you have not read a good moisture troubleshooting guide, it is worth twenty minutes of your evening.
The manufacturing side of this problem is upstream. Pellets need to be dried and stored dry. Extrusion has to run in a controlled environment. Spooling should happen at low RH. Vacuum sealing needs fresh desiccant, not the same silica pack that has been on the shelf for six months. Packaging should be dated, so you know how old the spool is when it lands at your door.
Ask specifically: What is your dried pellet storage RH? What is the spooling environment RH? When was the desiccant packed? Is the packaging date-stamped? A manufacturer with real moisture control will answer without hesitation. Red flags: no phone number, no US business hours, tickets that route to a chatbot, canned "please dry your filament and retry" responses to specific mechanical failures you already diagnosed. These are the signs of a company that treats support as a cost center to minimize, not a channel to learn from.
Green flags: a person who asks for your lot code, your printer model, your slicer profile, and your failure mode, and then actually looks at the QC record for that lot. A replacement policy that does not require you to fight for it. A direct line back to the extrusion team when the issue is unusual enough to warrant it.
